This book is about 11 year old Kalawa, an African American girl, who is also apart of the Gullah/Geechee community in South Carolina. She and her father take visits and trips across a multitude of countries in Africa. In their first adventure they stop in Sierra Leone in West Africa, to get in-touch with her roots, and as she arrives she falls in love with not only the music but also the many lessons about African musical instruments.
